Scotland the Brand is still around let's not loose the place here. When Scotland has something to sell and the world wants it, it will buy it. As for anything holding Scotland back, that generally speaking an irrelevant personage trying to get their irrelevant snout in to the pig’s trough a bit like the above article.
I think the above comment on the article says it all. I have not heard that the French are prepared to dismantle the Eiffel Tower and sell it to China for scrap iron! No it is a magnificent trade-mark in its own right, just as the Tartan and Kilt are Scotland's.

Scotland should have their own fashion industry separate from the cultural aspect without denigration of the later. Don't see why they can't maintain and develop both or is it a feeling of inferiority.

Sorry to be the first to tell you but not all Canadians speak French...

I think his point was just that about stereotyping and lumping large and diverse cultures with simplistic terms. We all know [or at least I hope we do] that not all Canadian speak french, there are some ice free areas in Canada [at least for 3 days in July ], etc. etc.

And anyway the Parliament building was down to some Spaniard called Mirrailles who unfortunately died before it was finished so I don't think you should blame Scots for that - just their elected representatives who made the decisions. Need I say more? As Jock says, tartan, shortbread etc. are maybe how the world sees Scotland but in reality it is much much more than such iconic stereotypes.
