My kilt hose from JHiggins seem to last. I have a pair I've worn for years. My oldest pair of kilt hose (that I only wear for formal or piping) is a pair of hand-knit wool piper's hose... they look good as new even through the washing machine.

I'm a poor sap and I can't afford those $50 per hose, and that's just one color. yikes!
So, all my store bought hose have been J Higgins, at $16 a piece you cant beat them, an 80/20 wool blend that I wear daily, doing so for the last 2-3 months and they are all still intact. Several washes included.

Guess I should take a closer look at the J Higgins hose selection. I didn't notice that they were wool blend, and thought they were all acrylic/nylon.
Although, Cavebear58 looks to be in the UK.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

I know these are cheap and cheerful but they last OK, a number of colours and in some they go up to a UK 15 (US16), at £4.99 a go its got to be worth it.

For us in The Western hemisphere.
 Call Ron at:

 http://www.hamiltondrygoods.com/sock.html

I have his Cotton, Wool and Linsey Woolsey socks. He is great to deal with and I do wear a real thin liner sock under the Kilt hose and my socks last a long time. His payment instructions are at the bottom of the page.
I have dyed his wool socks and they took the dye well.

 MrBill

PS buy three at a time and get a much better deal.

I second HDG for inexpensive, quality kilt hose. He's on ebay also and you can get a ribbed hose or a cable knit hose as well. And if you have large calves, these hose are much more comfortable around the calve.
