The level of security you experience in the airport is dependent on the person who is tasked with it. One person may go by the book, while the next is more lax in their interpretation. With regards to checked luggage, airlines require the bags be left unlocked so that suspicious items on the xray screen may be checked. This unfortunately can invite theft. I have a friend
who ships what would normally be his checked luggage via FedEx to his destination. He then picks it up when he arrives (he still takes a carry on bag with him.)
