What if they sold Kilts at Wall-Mart?
Generally speaking it is very difficult to buy a kilt "off the rack" most are custom made or sold online. What if a dozen or so different tartans and styles were available for 50 bucks or so at Wall-mart ? what effect would this have on the kilt wearing population?

I'd say they could do it for $39. If you shop for clothes at Wal-mart, more may wear kilts.

I think they'd look like what they would be...really cheap. I guess that's not necessarily a bad thing but it would definitely keep me from buying one.

Depending on the quality of assembly and material, I would probably have several more than I do now. I would expect it to not fall apart after the first wash, and I would not purchase one that is too light. Personally, I like a heavier material. I would not expect a Wal-Mart kilt to have the same quality as a USA kilt, but for casual wear it should be adequate. Tartan selection and color would also be a factor. By my own choice, I prefer more muted colors (blue, green, black), and stay away from bright colors (red, yellow).

I'll translate... it mean's no way Jose.
My reasons include:
Walmart is a small business killer... I happen to love our sponsors and the concept of small business.
$50 for a kilt is not much of a kilt. The material to make a cheap kilt costs that much.
You get what you pay for. You keep what you value. Value your heritage and the kilt makers who work tediously on your kilts.

I've thought about this, and as the kilt is the most tailored garment a man can wear I am not sure that having ill fitting Wal-Mart Kilts would be a good thing for kilt wearers in general. I'm not sure if you remember but around Burns Night this year a store much like Wal-Mart, Lidl in Europe, starting selling kilts so that everyone could get into the spirit for Burns Night. I am sure this move did nothing for kilt wearing as a whole, as I am almost certain that those who took advantage of this offer will not wear their Lidl Kilts regularly, and will only pull them out again for next years Burns Night. They will also, I would think look out of place amongst the kilt wearers who are wearing a quality kilt.

I am in complete agreement. Not so much on the cost, SWK offers kilts at prices not that much more than $50, and if someone is interested, under that price as well. And from I have been able to read through from the rabble, Jerry's kilts are amazing, for the price.
But, Wal-Mart, and other stores like them, are small business killers. They have no regard for who they put out of business and the means necessary to make that happen. Way to go to all of our sponsors, and even those who aren't, for keeping the traditions alive.

I'm in agreement about Wal-Mart.
I'm not a kilt snob, but do have issues with kilts going mainstream (a recent development). I do not like what Hot Topic sells and am afraid of Wal-Mart doing a cross between an SK and an Insta-Kilt.
UKs have been wholesaled to various shops in recent years, but those are specialty shops- small businesses.
I'm waiting on Macy's to carry them. You'll see kilts take off in the more affluent classes. That will make me cranky.
Anyway, kilts aren't "American" enough to be sold at Wal-Mart. Not a slam- just an understanding that the company focuses on lower-to-middle class Americans.

A Wal-Mart kilt? What would be the point?
