Unbelievable request

People do weird stuff on Haloween. It's less offensive to me than dressing as a priest or nun, with the flask hidden in a bible. If it is worn in the spirit of fun, I don't see the harm but I can certainly agree with not wanting to loan out a garment. On the other hand, my husband has been known to loan kilts, and several have gone on to purchase and wear kilts. I think it's a personal decision, but I wouldn't be offended to go to a party and see a kilt wearer. I would probably just tell him how he's doing it all wrong and if he wants to wear a kilt, how to do it right.
It's the folk I see at Highland Games that are wearing some pretty strange stuff, thinking they are Celtic warriors or something that bother me. We all have our buttons.

I have had people ask to borrow a kilt on more than one occasion. In each case, my response was a polite no with the suggestion they rent one from one of the stores that rents kilts for weddings, etc.

Why not emphasise why borrowing a personal kilt is not 'the done thing' or a good idea.... with the reason being that you wear your kilts in the traditional manner... in the full sense of the word... (wicked grin) after all they wouldnt want to borrow your boxers, y-front, briefs or xxxxxx (substitute with suitable underwear)!

You could suggest they get a travel rug and a belt and show them a site or two where they can learn how to make a great kilt? They can go to their party all 'Rob Roy and Braveheart' and less 'Sir Walter Scottish'

The only time I would lend a kilt is to family for some special reason...

I think you are over reacting in regards to the costume comment. First off, if they are dressing like a highlander of old, it can be used as a costume. Think back to when you used to trick or treat or go to parties. Many everyday articles of clothing can be used as a costume if desired. For instance, I used a black ski mask, black pants, and a black shirt as a ninja costume. Not a single item there is costume material, however, when put together, it can be used as one.

Well I once loaned someone a kilt to attend a wedding and I had to ask many many times before I got it back so I don't lend out my kilts now.
Though I wouldn't be offended if someone asked, would politely point them the way of a kilt hire shop or buying a cheap acrylic kilt, might just win over another convert to regular kilt wearing.

I agree with Alaskan Kilted Guy. It's not a costume, but these guys may be convinced what a great garment the kilt is. But, I'm also a hypocrite - I don't let anyone where my kilts, regardless.
