Wearing a kilt without the sporran?
Would most outsiders (outside the usual hecklers) still recognize it as a kilt without it? (I usually go out with my Ghillie shirt to try to complement my outfit just in case). I intend to get one anyway, as without it I feel empty without a place to store things, but I just wanted to know who acceptable it was to go without one in general?

I always wear one. Not because of convention but just somewhere to carry all the junk that I haul around. You can pick one up fairly cheaply from the sponsors on here or in the ebay shops. I recommend a Stillwater Kilts Cargo Sporran if you're after a functional, casual and very affordable one.
I also think people expect to see a sporran with a kilt...

I seldom wear one. It gets in the way at work. This is what I normally wear:

I find that with that I don't need a sporran. I don't carry much, though- insurance card, debit card, drivers liscence and cell phone. It all fits nicely. Sporrans are for dressing up a little nicer for me.

If it's a traditional kilt then I wear a sporran, if the kilt is contemporary and has pockets then I do not

Me too. I really need some place to carry my stuff. I don't know what I would do if I had a traditional kilt with pockets.

Ditto...
If I'm wearing my Utilikilts then a sporran isn't needed, nor does it add to the "look". But personally I think a traditional kilt looks "empty" without a sporran.

I have to go with the "where else you gonna put your stuff school" on this one. Even with pockets, I can't see carrying all my stuff in them.

I prefer to wear a sporran accept when it would get in the way, and always with my more traditional looking kilts. Kind of tartan = sporran I guess.
I have built in a few extra pockets to my daywear jacket, and it also has pockets on it's waistcoat to keep my sporran less crowded. For my less traditional looking kilt, I do have a vest with pockets and so on, but I would still probably tend to have a sporran of some sort.
