I remember the "plus fours" of my misspent childhood. "knickers" was the name of undergarments my sister wore .

I would certainly hesitate as they would likely be too short. The Plus-fours came down over the knee, and then had a cuff that went under the top of the stocking, as I remember it. (Of course that was more than 60 years ago.)

A much better (and cheaper) alternative are the Soccer hose, but they do not come in the argyle pattern to the best of my knowledge.

I own a pair - that I wear with a pair of plus fours. To play golf.

Anyway, they're thin, like dress socks, and don't come up high enough to be folded over. They're fine for the intended purpose, but they'd be too cheap-looking to wear with a kilt. And, let's be honest here, argyle socks with a kilt? A definite no-no.

I sure hope so! My heart calls out for tweed plus fours and a matching flat cap! I'll run for my life now!
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Will they do for wearing with a kilt?
I tried a pair once. They did not go all the way over my calves and did not stay up. My calves are not skinny and not too muscular, yet the socks were still stretched to the point where I thought they would rip. Unless you are not tall and have thin calves, I don't think they will work with most kilts.

Thanks Jay, I was wondering if the cotton/nylon/spandex was a combination for style, not warmth.

It seems to me that there's a very thin line between argyle and tartan hose. Given the right choice and arrangment of colors, the pattern would work.

Here's one in the "nice try" category with the Wallace tartan:
