Technically, lets bust out a quote from the STA website;
"White kilt hose is regarded by many as an abomination and should only be worn by pipe bands. The culprits in the wide spread exposure given to this sartorial 'faux pas' are the kilt hire companies who, understandably, find it much more economically viable to offer hose of any colour as long as it's white! Cream hose is acceptable as are any colours that tone in with the jacket or kilt. Diced or tartan hose can also be worn."

I personally do not like white hose much at all. To me, it pulls the eyes down to them immediately, regardless of the tartan being worn (excluding, of course, loud mcleod and buchanan).
I think the kilt outfit is much more aesthetically pleasing when the hose are colored to match. The whole outfit just seems to work better that way.
Again, to my eye.

Or, perhaps, "Friends don't let friends wear white kilt hose!"
(Now that would be a great t-shirt)

Gents, with respect.
Are we not moving away from the original intent of the post. Mark is; or at least how I understand it, a student and therefore on a limited budget. He is based in the Netherlands which is not renound for having kilt suppliers on every corner and is trying to obtain advice on how to attend a formal-ish function, in Kilted attire without looking like a chump. He has done his level best to produce a style (hired PC being the clue here) and is merely asking if the X-marks community approve and should he wear BLACK socks or CREAM socks. I think his current get-up is more than sufficient to accomplish this objective. Go ahead Mark, you'll blow them away!
