Plain day jackets - UK makers?
Does anyone have any recommendations for plain (tweed) day jacket makers in the UK?
I can't afford a lot, but I need a suitable jacket other than the PC for more formal day wear.
Thanks
Graham.

Hector Russell has a nice tweed on special sale for 99gbp (about $150 US), with an optional matching waistcoat for another 49gbp (about $75). Good variety of sizes, 3 standard colors, allegedly 1-2 week delivery.

Five of my tweed Argyll jackets came from "Geoffrey (Tailor) Ltd" of Edinburgh ( www.geoffreykilts.co.uk ), in addition to my Prince Charlie and GT Doublets. I have also had two "21st Century Kilts" tweed jackets from the same stable. Quality: First Class. Prices: Average.
Take care,
Ham.

If you are in Edinburgh try Armstrongs in the Grassmarket. They always have plenty second-hand and reasonably priced.

Most of the ready to wear "kilt jackets" on the UK market are coming from a small number of makers. Most kilt makers and vendors don't make jackets but order them from other suppliers. Many of the made-to-measure jackets are not really custom or bespoke but minor tailoring inputs to standard production. There is simply no great market for high grade kilt jackets from kilt makers. What they then sell--- and I even include those with Royal Warrants-- can be fine of appearance but pedestrian in workmanship (fused, machine made). Mactag Ltd in Glasgow offered amazing prices to head-butt with Asian imports and seem to have gone swoosh but some of their stuff is still floating around. Another good source of value would be Magee in Donegal (Eire). They, I think, have moved all production now offshore but they are still distinctly Irish with some nice tweeds and woolens. A great source of tweed, of course, is Haggarts of Aberfeldy. Price point is well above Mactag (Clann Crois) and Magee but still within reason for a machine made jacket. Some of their heavy estate tweeds are spectacular. For anything better one really would need to take the jump towards good bespoke of the likes of Campbell and Co in Beauly.
