Plain Black Faille
I'm considering the Plain Black Faille fabric on F & K's remnant list as a first attempt at a kilt. Price is right. Can anyone give me more information about what is meant by "faille". Would this be suitable cloth for a kilt? Ideally it would turn out so good I could wear it to a formal occasion but it will probably be worn as a hiking kilt. Pro's and Con's?

Faille is one of those terms that describes the weave of the fabric, not the content of the fabric.
"Faille [fyle] A ribbed fabric with a low luster. Heavier yarns are used in the filling or weft. Example of faille is grosgrain."
Most failles are finer & flatter than grosgrain, but they are in the same family.
"A low luster, soft fabric with a visible rib weave. Silk, rayon, or polyester fibers are commonly used."
"Faille (rhymes with "pail")
Faille is a ribbed fabric finish with structure and body. This finish is also seen in bridesmaids styles today. Most faille finishes are woven from silk, cotton, rayon or polyester fabrics."
The cross ribs are very noticeable & it can be difficult to launder. Apparently, you get your choice of pronunciations, too. ;-) It tends to be a soft fabric, & it might not have enough body for a kilt. You should request a sample piece before ordering.
Land's End is using it in women's swimwear:

The description says it makes you look slimmer. I should try it.

I have been looking at that as well. I would definitely get a sample if I were you. I am interested to hear your opinion and the outcome on this stuff.

To let you all know I have made a couple kilts out of it and I think they look awesome. If your gonna make a kilt for the first time try it . You'll find it pleats up nicly and take heat well.
