I've never had squirrels in my house (birds down the chimney into the woodstove, yes) but a raccoon once dropped a litter of kits in my attic. Never since have I left an attic window open.

One summer evening in my teens I was standing in the alley behind our garage, throwing kerosene on a wasp nest under the garage eaves, when a neighbor came by and asked what I was doing. I explained that soaking the nest with kerosene was the best way I knew to evict the wasps. He nodded and left.

A few weeks later he came by, reminded me of our previous conversation, and said, "I can't for the life of me remember how you said you burn the nest without setting fire to the garage." He deserves a gold star for coming by to ask; I had not suggested burning the nest; the stench of the kerosene is enough to drive the wasps away.

Nowadays we pay $6 or $7 for a can of wasp spray, but back then there was no wasp spray and kerosene was only 23 cents per gallon.

I had squirrels chewing the T-111 siding on my cabin. I mixed a bottle of Cayenne with wood stain and painted the siding. It worked until the squirrels developed a taste for cayenne - unless they were undocumented squirrels from south of the border ??

To make this even more surreal, they had this rocket scientist on the local news last night and he was seriously acting like it was all the squirrel's fault. No' foolin'.

They also said that his insurance company would probably cover the whole thing. Read that policy over and see if there's a clause that mentions "acts of total stupidity" in there, will ya'.

I'm sure it was just the reporter's oversight when they failed to mention that just prior to the insuing debacle, the homeowner was heard to say...

From my experience with the "tree rats' (Carolina grays), the squirrels would be totally unscathed. No need to go into details, but I have a running battle with them that has been going on for 30 plus years. So far, it is generally stalemate.
