I agree that for most formal events, it would be out of place. I've been to many a dinner or performance where the dress code was pretty loose - where attendees might wear everything from suits and day dresses to tuxes and gowns. I could see how having something like that in your closet would be fun to pull out for just such times.
But I'm really curious now about that kilt in the cream-colored tartan it is being shown with...
