At a guess. A waistcoat that goes(matches) with an Argyll jacket? I confess that I have not heard them described as such before.

That's what it is. A 5-button waistcoat that goes with an Argyll jacket. PC vests have 3-buttons I believe.

Might it not be more accurate to speak of an "evening waistcoat/vest" which usually is cut lower and has three or four buttons, when one speaks of a "PC Vest"? The higher cut waistcoats/vests usually have five or six buttons and are worn with a four-in-hand neck tie. Sometimes these are worn in the evening.

Might I suggest having an evening waistcoat made of tartan, cut on the bias? Very sharp looking and always correct!

I can see this looking good with an Argyle Jacket for day wear, but would it be correct for formal occasions? What about with a PC jacket?

A tartan waistcoat, cut on the bias, is very traditional and completely correct for formal evening wear, I cannot recall, however, seeing one worn with day wear.
