NW Phoenix Rabble Kilt Night Pics

The Rabble members in the Northwest Phoenix metro area have had several get togethers of late. First was the Kirkin' o' the Tartans a couple weeks ago, that I already posted pics of. Last Sunday we convened at the Valley's newest & finest Irish pub - Lis Doon Varna. A week late, but here's the pics from that outing.

A couple of photos of the pub's front. It's a large place & they made it look part of an Irish street scene with several contiguous buildings. Notice the real thatch roof (that was tough passing fire codes).

Slainte! (L-R: Sionnach, his wife, Thunderbolt, his wife, Spartan, Retro Red)

The first outing for my new saguaro kilt pin on my Arizona tartan.

Showing that our kilts our near to our hearth; a mantle we're willing to bear.

2 of their bars (I counted at least 5). You might say they've really raised the bar for pubs in the Valley!

    Celtic Thunder outing

Then last Friday, 3 of us went together to the Celtic Thunder concert. Of course, we needed a photo of us before carpooling to the show.

Nice looking pub. Looks like you are evaluating their products (5 bars,...that's a lot of product to check.)

Great looking pub and group. Not so sure about all the puns in the captions.

Thanks for posting the photos. I'm glad that you got some of the front of the building.

Celtic Thunder was great. It was a full house at the Dodge Theater, which holds about 5,500. I have their two newest CD's. Everything that they sang were ones on the CD's. I was a little disappointed not to hear something new. On the other hand, there is a difference hearing familiar songs in a live setting. I think that we all agreed that we would like to have heard more Celtic songs, and not so many remakes. The audience was responsive, and they did have interaction with the audience, especially in later part of the performance. It's spectacular to see them perform Heartland as the opener, and to see it live. They closed with Ireland's Call (the Irish national rugby anthem) and then Caledonia. Ireland's Call brought a number of people to their feet. One of the fun parts was the instrumental interlude between the last two numbers. That was clearly an Irish instrumental performance. The instrumentalists were clearly upstage and part of the show. The male instrumentalists wore black kilts throughout. The singers came out in their black kilts for Caledonia. I believe that it was Ryan who teased the ladies with his kilt. Damian (the teen) clearly was a favorite of some of the young lasses in the audience. All in all an enjoyable evening. The lady checking our tickets at the entrance said she was glad to see us in our "uniforms."

Aye, it was great fun. It's always fun to get together with the rabble!

Lis Doon Varna is a great place to go. They have good food, excellent Guinness, are working on their scotch inventory and seem to enjoy seeing kilts. With the traditional floorplan, there's plenty of room to have your own quiet nook, or loud, rockin' party. They also have regular bands, both professional and up-and-coming groups as well.

Celtic Thunder was a good concert. I had a good time. Good venue, an nice proximity to Seamus McCaffertys!

I agree that the show was well turned out. But a few more 'trad' tunes would have been nice. And the piper in me would like the pipes played more!

All in all, a good show. Not something I will be standing in line to see again, probably only because of their music selection, however worth the see. And family oriented as well. (mostly!)

That looks great! Next time I'm in Arizona, I may have to make a trip up that way.
