Pics of Kirkin' o' the Tartan, Phoenix, 18 Nov 2008

Last Sunday, Spartan invited the Phoenix area Rabble to a Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans Service. Three of us showed up – myself, Sionnach & Thunderbolt – & here’s the pictures I took.

From where we were sitting in the back, looking to the front. Notice the tartans draped on the alter.

Spartan gave a very fine sermon explaining the history & significance of Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans, the consecration of the first Bishop of the American Episcopal Church on November 14th (the reason for having the service last Sunday) & the close ties of the American Episcopal Church to Scotland. Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of Spartan delivery his sermon, as I thought taking a picture might be disruptive, but you can see him over the heads of the congregation in the upper left of the picture below.

The recessional at the end of the service

One piper turned towards me to get his picture taken…

And some more pics… As you can see from our somewhat washed out faces in some of the pics & our squinting eyes, Phoenix sunshine is intensely bright! It may have been the middle of November, but personally, I was getting too warm standing out there & was glad to get to my car & doff the PC jacket. Our high Sunday was 83ºF / 28.3ºC & we set a record high temp Monday of 87ºF / 30.6ºC !!!

Finally, a decent photo of me in my formal attire…

A beautiful day (in the neighborhood) & a wonderful service. Thanks for the invite, Spartan!

    Th-th-that's all folks!

The service began at 10 in the morning & I believe ended about 11:30. So, those pics of us outside were taken probably just before Noon.

Wow, great eyes, FS! Yes, the MCPB does indeed wear the Bruce of Kinnaird tartan.

    Craig,
    Great pictures! Thanks for posting.

For those who are interested here's a link to the MCPB: http://www.mcpb.org/. The pipe band has been doing this with All Saints' since the mid '80s.

Always nice to see a verger on duty! (for you non-Anglicans, he's the fellow with the mace leading the recessional out.)

Great photos, Red! I wish I could have been there.

    Regards,

    Todd
