Second the post on the PC being above the Tux on the formal scale.
A Bramer is the better choice IMHO, in that it can be a very dressy "suit" jacket if worn with a four-in-hand tie, and a belt, or as a tux with the vest, formal shirt and bow tie. (no belt).
Actually I have seen black Argyle jackets worn with a formal vest and shirt to black tie occasions, and they did not look out of place.
The modified sport coat into an Argyle or Crail is a good choice. Just a lot of work, though. (I am in the process of doing so) Proper buttons make a lot of difference in the finished product. Choose wisely.
