Wash them by hand or throw them in the washer in cold water and hang dry.

I was thinking of doing the washer, then throwing them in my mini spin dryer, then hanging to finish drying. (centrifuge, no heat, saved my butt a few times, that and a hand cranked washing machine. Great when the laundry room pipes freeze.)

Welcome Walter,
Wear whatever you wish, however if you're last name is Clark, like mine, wear your own tartan! You don't have to worry about irking anyone then. Enjoy the site!

from South Wales UK!
Great kilts have their fans but probably are more for special events more than everyday wear.
The chances of a tartan irking someone is very limited - a rare example would be one like the Balmoral Tartan which is limited to the British Royal Family or those who wear it with permission.

from WV! Ebay is a great source for inexpensive wool. You can come across actual tartan really cheap sometimes. There is Robertson on ebay that I am watching right now. Can't get the seller to email back on the weight. Well, anyway WELCOME!

You have good questions and have definitely come to the right place to find answers. Alas, I have none of them.
