Kilt alteration question

C, welcome to the forum....good luck on this...R. can better guide you than I ...But, thare's got to be a kilty nearby who'll lone you a (lowish cost) kilt for the play...whare are you located?and what size?

To be honest I didn't think of a loaner. I am in PA, close enough to Pittsburgh if something was there. He's about 28/29 inch waist, which is okay with what I have, but the hips are for more like 38/39.

I am assuming that the 38-39 hips are the kilt and not the lad? Another possible solution, if the borrowing fails, is a Stillwater kilt, they are some quite inexpensive ones that might fit the bill. Check out some of the threads on them. Their speed of shipping is legendary!

If the Skirt you have has darts in the apron you can simply take them out.

This should give you enough room by making the waist bigger to make up the difference in Hip to Waist ratio. Then simply wrap the skirt around your person (outer apron opening on the right hand side) and re-position the straps to fit.

For a one off play costume this may be enough.
