The Secret of Roan Inish

There wasn't a lot on my over 100 available stations yesterday, so I caught the last 2/3 of this movie on Showtime. Of course it is a sort of a fairy tale kind of movie, but one thing made it really worth watching. It was filmed in County Donegal, Ireland and the scenery is absolutely gorgeous. I see now why Ireland is called The Emerald Isle.

The Secret of Roan Inish is a wonderful movie, quite unlike anything else, its tone setting it apart from other movies of similar subject or look.
I'd recommend you spend on the rental, if only to see how that first 1/3 serves to set the foundation of the story, and injects a real strength into the film's's otherwise "wishful" bones.

great john sayles movie. big family favorite of ours. killer soundtrack that stands on it's own, as well.

once VERY hard to find, this movie has resently been rereleased and deeply discounted, generally about $9.99. WELL worth the coin. surprisingly we found our most recent copy for sale at our local grocery market chain.

Very nice movie, happens to be one of my wifes favs, so we watch it every few years.

I watched it a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it - but then stories and songs of selkies, the little people, mystical sea creatures, and the like have always appealed to me.

I saw this flick at the end of Day 1 of a Celtic Christianity retreat. It really captures the mystical qualities and that magical connection between the Celtic people and nature, especially the sea.

One of my favorite little exchanges is when Fiona (the little girl) refers to the seal she keeps seeing as Jax. Her cousin says, more than just a little annoyed, "How d'ye know his name is Jax?" She just very matter-of-factly responds, "It just is," as if he's a bonehead for questioning it.

I also like the way the crazy distant cousin who tells her the story of her lost baby brother and the selkie, and then looks at her with crazy eyes and says, "We've been waitin' for ya, Fiona," somehow knowing she will solve the mystery.

Brilliant Movie- absolutely world class!

Speaking of wee gems of a movie: has anyone seen the gaelic language film Seachd: the Inaccessible Pinnacle (http://www.seachd.com/)? I caint remember- it may have been on this forum that I saw it referenced... It looks aaaawwwesome! It just gives me goose pimples watching the previews (see website). But of course it doesn't appear to be available on DVD here in the States? Go figure.
