I'll second that.
Kilts aside for a moment, I watched his speech in the video and he looks like a refreshing change for not only the city but for the province. I used to live in BC (not Vancouver) and was quite dissapointed.

Yes, of course you are correct, Rathdown. I've checked. It seems that Gregor has a rather loud Harris and a PC. It was felt that he would be better dressed up than down for this occasion and the straight tie was the happy medium. I'm told he has a bone-buttoned jacket -- without Argyll cuffs and epaulets -- on order. We all know how long that process can sometimes take! As for the flower, that was some TV type who pinned it on and he failed to correct her in the blush of the moment. He removed it after several pics were taken.
Gregor is not a kilt neophite. This was really not an effort for him and, as you said, the point that we are all interested in is that he is comfortable kilted and that wide exposure was given to the level of his comfort.

I'm in the OTHER Vancouver, and I'm jealous. Oh, nice looking kilt, too.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so... What nice dimples!
Also, an exciting moment for kilt-wearers everywhere. He wears it VERY well. ;)

That was not Gregor's first outing with his kilt. If any one wants to see him in a kilt, come to the Gung haggis fat choy dinner on January 25, 2009. He will be there with other Vancouver city Councilors as well. Some of them will be kilted as well. A few months ago, Vancouver City Council woman Heather Deal was at the Vancouver Kilts night.
Larry Campbell, a former Vancouver, owns an Utilikilt Workman and had his photograph on the Utilikilts website for a while. He had moved on and became a Senator.
Aside from Gregor, there is also another kilted official. He got elected to the Vancouver Parkboard last month as well. He is not only a Vancouver Kilts Night regular, but also a member of this this board. He is none other than our own Northernsky. I am not sure how often he will be visiting this site as he now has 2 jobs!
Vancouver is just a different city and that's why I am not leaving.

Well, said, Raphael. I didn't mean to leave you out of the roll call, either, Stuart. Kilt-friendly Vancouver has simply too many of us to list and it was just that Gregor had his pic front-and-centre the day after his inaguration. Good, subtle media attention for all the world to see.

I forgot to mention one more thing.
Heather Deal is one of the pictures that Glen posted. She is the lady in the red jacket.
The Chinese guy in the picture is Raymond Louie. He is one of the City Councilor and he wore a Royal Stewart to the Gung Haggis Dinner last year.

Raphael is very correct. We now actually have a very tartan friendly city council in Vancouver.
We believe that if you can wear a kilt in this city, then you probably also have the honesty to wear whatever underneath your tartan and the balls to be a politician.
New Mayor Gregor Robertson wore his modern hunting Robertson to the 2008 Gung Haggis Fat Choy dinner at the start of this year.
Re-elected councilors Heather Deal and Raymond Louie, put forward and seconded the city proclamation for Tartan Day for April 6th. Raymond Louie also read the proclamation on April 6th as deputy mayor that day.
Re-elected councilors Deal + Tim Stevenson, George Chow joined us for a photo opportunity with outgoing Mayor Sam Sullivan.
New Rookie councilors Andrea Reimer, Kerry Jang and Geoff Meggs attended Gung Haggis Fat Choy dinner earlier this year... as well as re-elected councilors Suzanne Anton, David Cadman, Deal, Louie, Stevenson, Chow and re-elected former councilor Ellen Woodsworth.
Woodsworth has also been a past honourary drummer for the Gung Haggis Fat Choy dragon boat team and was featured on a dragon boat in the 2005 St. Patrick's Day parade, wearing a tartan sash.
Hey our Gung Haggis Fat Choy dinner was 11 for 11 for predicting the 2009 winning city council candidates and Mayor.
We also had two parks board candidates attend Stuart "Northern Sky" Mackinnon and Aaron Jasper.... and they got elected too!

And those of us who live here in Vancouver just may be making some hits on Vancouver's Council for the 250th Burns. Doesn't this sound like a world-wide opportunity for tartan/kilt promotion? A world-class City of 2 mil, with a forward-thinking City Council full of kilted folk in a kilt-friendly environment chuck-full of kilted folk, gearing up for the 2010 Winter Olympics? I think I'll stay here for the 2009 winter to see what happens.

Good on the new Mayor. Vancouver is a very kilt friendly city. From kilt nights to Gung Haggis, home of the best pipe band in the world (SFU), the B.C regiment's Irish pipe band, and the Seaforth Highlanders. We are blessed with great kilt makers (plus Steve is just across the water in Victoria). Does it get any better?
Just love walking around town kilted - so many positive comments. The best this week was from a stunning woman (tall, dark hair, fantastic blue eyes, in a power suit - wonder if she made an impression on me?) who walked by me while slowly eyeing me from head to toe. As we passed she locked eyes with me while uttering only one word " Goooorgeous". It still sends shivers down my spine. Ahh the power of the kilt and to a city that appreciates this fine garment
