    What have I started?

Just where are you "borrowing" the thermometer devices from, and do the higher-ups there know about it, and do they want them back?

Well, I'm not kidding. In fact, I'm really stoked about pulling this off and writing a quality report for the edification of the rabble, complete with full photos (modesty preserved or course), graphs, and statistical analysis. Stay tuned.

I was wondering if you were online today, Tartan Hiker.

The revised forecast for tomorrow night (as of the local newscast at 11:00 last night) is 9 degrees F, instead of the original 12, with no snow and not much wind. That was all last night.
This is turning into something very interesting. I wonder if anyone else would like to try it and compare the results? I only have the one kilt, so I guess I'd have to compare machine-made vs. hand-knit kilt hose.

I'm looking forward to the results.

Yeah...no students today but I'm here at school engaged in important work, such as checking X-Marks and setting up my new LabQuest data recorders. How fortunate that we just received new portable data recorders and a box full of temperature probes.

The principal just walked by and I told her I was checking out the new equipment in preparation for a lab. If only she knew....

...which isn't really a lie since I need to figure out how these things work before I need them in my AP Biology class. :-)

Well, the study has been conducted and the data are in. Very interesting results. I'm working up a post with all the photos, graphs, statistical treatments, and conclusions.
Will post this in the General Kilt Talk forum when I get it whipped into shape.

Now THIS will be worth reading, and may be worthy of a sticky since the issue comes up every year without fail. Perhaps you will present it to the Royal Scientific Society.

Too late for that, Turpin. I've already submitted it for publication in the Journal of Geriatric Kilting.

I have mostly machine sewn, 13 oz wool, PV and canvas kilts and one in leather (), all because I don't have any Scottish heritage. When I decided to get a hand sewn clan tartan kilt I went with Matt's 4 yard box pleat and it is amongst my absolute favourites. Because it is 16 oz and hand sewn. It certainly feels a lot lighter but is still able to retain some warmth in the winter. An 8 yarder in the same weight would be warmer though but it truly is a beautiful and authentic kilt. That being said my next kilt will be a Black Watch from WPG. 22 oz, decent quality (Pakistani made) and an unbeatable price at $300 USD. I have seen McMurdo's WPG (Gordon, I believe) in -25C weather and was sold. One consideration that you havn't seemed to mention is how much you're wanting to spend. As for depth of pleats that depends also on the size of sett. What are you currently considering? How many kilts do you see in the future?
