Louis P. Noble, Irish Warpiper (London Irish Pipeband), early 1900s to 1920s

Note the hodding (solid tweed or wool) kilt usually in a dark shade of gray, Tara brooch, and brat-like sash.

Actually, these pipers are "Free Staters" -- members of the Irish Free State Army.

It isn't solid colour...look closely and you will see that it is tartan.

I hereby declare that no one can give Panache any guff about wanting to wear a flat cap. Or heck, after seeing this, I'd question the right of anyone to comment in a critical manner on anyone else's fashion choices.

I found this one this morning

George, the second son of Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark, was born at Marlborough House on 3rd June, 1865. Most of his childhood was spent at Sandringham, Buckingham Palace and Balmoral.
After being educated at home by the Rev. J. N. Dalton, George became a naval cadet at Dartmouth. By 1889 he was commander of a torpedo boat. However, in January 1892, his naval career came to an end when his older brother, Prince Edward, died of pneumonia. Edward had been engaged to marry his German cousin, Princes Mary of Teck. It was now decided she should marry George instead.

The Duke of York

As a great-grandson of Queen Victoria, Albert was styled His Highness Prince Albert of York from birth. In 1898, Queen Victoria issued Letters Patent that granted the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales the style Royal Highness, and at age two, Albert became His Royal Highness Prince Albert of York.

The Prince and Princess of Wales

Abergeldie Castle stands only 2 miles from the Royal family's country home at Balmoral and dates from the 16th century.
The castle has had many well-known guests over the years and these have even included royalty. Sadly, there has also been an uninvited guest who has made herself known to the occupants over the centuries.
She is known as Kittie Rankie or sometimes French Kate. Apparently she was a woman of French origin who was at one time employed in the castle.
It is said that this unfortunate lady was accused of practising black magic and arrested soon after to be charged with witchcraft.
After confinement in the castle she was eventually found guilty and thereafter taken to a local hill where she was tied to a stake and burnt for her supposed crimes. Evidently this poor soul returned to haunt the castle after her death.
