Once again it is a matter of taste (and the pocketbook). From your description, I would opt for the charcoal, or even a somewhat lighter gray.

As has been said before, no matter what you do, some one will find fault with it! Just don't let it get you down. The most important thing is the ensemble. If it all goes well together, the go for it.

Try matching/ toning with the upper half of your torso- i.e. match your shirt or your jacket.

Consider your other tartan also. Brown and bison would work but on my monitor I would go ancient blue hose and claret garter ties from Scottish Tartan Museum. Second would be claret hose w/ brown garters.
