I do like your quotation, however!
These days, maybe we should add "pipe bands"..."Only young boys, some virgins, and pipe bands wear white socks". 
And, yes, to you white socks fans (must be from Chicago? tee-hee!)...wear 'em well...BUT, I'll still secretly cringe when I see white socks! Us girls seem to have a built in fashion police system! But, of course, wear what you like to wear, wear what makes you happy!
