Nope. Love the clan tartan, I just don't need two kilts of one tartan.

Why? Like Buckskin and The Barry have pointed out, you have your choice of more than twenty clan-associated tartans.

One would think that you would want to wear MacDonald, but if not... well how about clergy tartan?

Clergy tartan is certainly on my list as will be the MacDonald hunting or ancient. I have far more time than money.

Since you are a pastor, you could consider one of the clergy tartans, as an option. My first tank is on order now and it will be the Episcopal Clergy tartan. It will be very appropriate for many of the formal wear occasions that I will have.

And, as others have said, there's nothing wrong with having more than one kilt in your clan tartan.

Speaking as a Donald myself, here are the Kilts I have:

Macdonald Modern tank (Hand stitched 8 yard)
Macdonald of Clanranald Tank
Macdonald Modern casual (5 yard polyviscose)
Argyll and Sutherland highlanders military box pleated (8 yards hand sewn in 22ox wool)
Denim modern Kilt for mucky work
Pride of Scotland 5 yard polyviscose
Heritage of Wales 8 yard machine sewn acrylic
5 yard tweed


I wear the acrylic ones and the denim strictly as casual attire, but I would wear any of the others to a formal event.
It's the QUALITY of the Kilt that matters for formal events.

I gather from your posting that you don't so much "need" another kilt as "want" one. Since you are a gentleman of "limited funds" wouldn't it make sense to purchase a tank in M'Donald or Clergy rather than something a bit more "whimsical"?

Your full weight, hand stitched, made to measure kilt will be an heirloom that will outlast you. Whereas your current one, will probably not.

I don't see why you would buy such a work of art in anything other than your clan tartan. You can always buy another SWK or whatever when the first is worn out and buy something different then.

If you are going to buy a universal, I'd go for a Black Watch - IMHO it is a genuine universal having been issued to SO many military units over the years.

If you're planning on wearing the m2m, wool kilt for ceremonies though, I guess the clergy would be the next best choice. To be honest, I was ordained 8 years ago, and specialise in wedding blessings, and yet only two couples have asked me to wear a kilt (and then only when I expressed the wish to do so because the groom was).

Thanks for the great answers all. I'll have to see where the next kilt selection goes. I actually like several of the neutral tartans. My preferred tartan is the MacDonald Modern as it's the family tartan but also want a little variety so I'm not wearing the same tartan to every event.

The next kilt won't be a tank but will be a little nicer than the standard I have. Then I'll have a tank or heavyweight wool kilt made when it's time. Thanks again.
