    Jock,

So Campbell and Weathered Campbell would be fine but not Campbell and Mcleod of Lewis right?

Did people use solid colored ones as well or were they always tartan?

    Cheers

You have got it right there, Jamie. You only need to look at the Atholl Highlanders(Europe's only private army), today,to see all shades of the same Murray tartan on parade.I don't recall seeing any plaid that was not tartan at functions, tweed was certainly used by the shepherds out on the hill, but I don't suppose if it was pouring with rain that anyone would worry too much on any occasion! Interestingly I wear the MacLeod of Harris tartan and I was thinking last night, whilst contributing to this thread, that I am not sure that I would consider a MacLeod of Lewis tartan around my shoulders.I hasten to add, from an aesthetic point of view only! As the MacLeods have over a dozen tartans to choose from, ALL of them can ,in theory, be worn together in one form or another. The same would apply to the many Clan Donald tartans and no doubt other clans and their tartans too.

I have a laird's plaid in my MacIntyre Hunting Modern. If it would only get cold enough here for me to wear it.
