    190 lb. Class

I've been thinking about starting to train for Scottish Athletics. Is the 190 Pound Class done at games in the Southeast? Also, what weights are used for the various events in this class? How about Highland Wrestling? Thanks for the info.

The weights depend on your age. If you're a Master, they're different. I'm not sure about the 190's, we don't do them here in Nor Cal. But just because there's not a 190 group doesn't mean that you shouldn't go for it anyway!

    Open weights for Men

    Open stone...15 - 17 lbs, usually right around 16
    Braemar stone ... 20 - 30 pounds but usually right around 22

Heavy weight for distance...56 pounds...this is HEAVY
    Light weight for distance...28 pounds

Light hammer...16 pounds on a 4 foot handle
Heavy hammer... 22 pounds on a 4 foot handle

    weight over the bar...56 pounds

Caber is variable, every single one is different but a C class caber might be about 60 pounds and 14-16 feet long

IF you're a Master (40+) then wherever you see 56 pounds up there, substitute 42 pounds.

Regarding Scottish Wrestling, we don't' do it here in Nor California, but DANG I wish we did. I'd be all over it, it looks like loads of fun!

KD - on a good day I weigh 175lbs. Don't worry about throwin' with the big boys, they're good folks and don't care what you weigh just that you're throwing. Go for it man!

The 190 Lb class uses the same weights as the masters class. The heavy weights are the 42 pounders instead of the 56. I have only been to a few games out here in the west that have the 190 class. As one of the bigger guys, 235 lbs, come on out we are always looking for new throwers to keep the sport alive. And yes, not to sound stuck on myself, we are a good group too! Good Luck!

Thanks for the encouragement. I've started doing the kettlebell workouts and love it! I really wish the wrestling were more popular, as I grew up wrestling from an early age and coached it for 10 years before moving further south. By the way, where do you guys buy your equipment such as hammers? I love the various weight suggestions people have offered. Any other training tips?

The best weights are from Bobby Dodd at http://www.mjolnir1.com

They are spendy and you may wait for a bit. He is working with a new foundry and is still working with them on the specs. These are the standard gear in the Pacific Northwest. You might even get a local machine shop to make something close. My brother is a Mill worker and has made some of our gear, as we have increased the number of throwers in the area. Take a picture of what you want and the specifications of what you need to the machine shop and see what they will charge you. Good Luck!

    Practice hammer...

Get a 4 foot piece of 1-inch threaded ABS pipe with a cap threaded and cemented on. Wrap the end a couple of times with duct tape. Drop 3, 5 lb dumbell plates down the pipe until they sit at the bottom.

To to park. Throw. Try not to kill small children and dogs. For the "Heavy Hammer" drop another 5 pounder, or a 5 and a 2.5 and throw. You'll heave that thing, on the average about 40x before it busts. Then go spend $4.00 and buy a new one.

For WFD and WOB, see Detroitpete's thread. You can make workable stuff out of galvanized plumbing fittings, a reducer, and big eye bolt, and whatnot. It's not as nice as the "real stuff" but it will get you going for cheap.

for a stone...go down to the river and find one. Literally. Get one that's around 15-16 pounds and reasonably smooth. If you get a 10-12 pounder, use that for work on form.
