    Kilted at class

So, I've been going to college classes for about 6 weeks now. I've been wearing one of two kilts (SWK's, Black Stewart Standard, Black Watch acrylic Heavy). I went this past friday, and had a few more reactions than normal. I usually just get a "nice kilt" or "what's with the kilt?" - very short non-events usually.

Anyway, this week, I was about 5 minutes late for class. So I walk in, and apparently this professor has never noticed the kilt before. I walk in, and apologize for being late. She then gets very excited and says "Well Chase! What's the occasion?!" Before I have time to answer, the guy who sits behind me (whom I've talked to about it before, he owns a kilt but doesn't wear it except for special events) yells out "It's Friday!" I couldn't help but chuckle then.

So I told her that I'd been wearing one each Friday, and she couldn't believe she hadn't noticed. Three of the girls sitting around me jump in at this point "Yeah, he's got a green one too!" So then the class goes on and converses about kilts for about 5 minutes while the professor still can't get over it. Finally, she says "So they say that a real Scotsman doesn't wear anything under the kilt" and the whole class gets quiet... talk about being put on the spot

I respond simply "Well, that is what they say..." with laughter from the class, and we move on to the lesson.

I move on to my next class, and as I'm walking in the building, I spot two guys standing at the doors with their cell-phones up, camera ready, both steadied on... the hot girl on the sidewalk? No... they're both following my movements. How often do you see guys taking pictures of other guys with their cell phone cameras?

I was then stopped by an older gentleman who has been to Edinburgh a few times, and we just talked about Scotland, and kilts in general before I went on to class.

Next week I get to hang out with a class of fourth graders while kilted though, looking forward to that one

    Good for you!!

As much fun and as comfortable as kilts are for walking they're the ideal garment for men who have to sit for long periods of time

Congrats on your Collegate kilt experiments. I have been going to classes in a kilt for about two years now. Its great fun. I however get disparaging remarks, being in an italian town in the USA doesnt help either. People are just very closed minded around here. But you just have to look at them and say... "HEY... UP YOUR KILT!!!"

    once again congrats.

    Good on ya, Chasem!

That's pretty darned funny about the other dudes taking pics/MPEG video with their cell phones of you, rather than some girl.

You know, I keep thinking, seeing as I work at Stanford, of designing a Stanford Tartan and making a kilt out of it.

Well, our college theme is Scotland, and my kilt generally goes un-noticed, even though it's one of about 4 on campus, and worn about 10 times as often.
Today was a bad day, as I posted elsewhere. I got a lot of snide remarks about skirts and things like that, most of which came from friends that don't generally comment...

    I don't get it.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. I've yet to have a bad day kilted at school. Worst was a "Nice skirt" from a lady in her 40's, but that was in jest, as she knew well what it was.

And that is odd, Toad. I've not taken any flak from friends, most think it's cool but don't have the ba- ...gusto... to wear it themselves.

The girlfriend still needs some exposure though.

Edit: In proofreading, I realize that the girlfriend comment didn't quite come out as intended... she needs more exposure to the kilt, not to what's under the kilt. That could've been embarassing

I just started classes monday And I decided to wear a kilt for my first day.

Going into the bookstore there was a little asian girl the eyed me up and down, well up and down the kilt, as I was going in. And wile in the book store I was on the lookout, so to speak, for a draft as I was in line in front of a few women. So overall nothing to note.

I didn't get any thing but the occasional look while waiting in a busy hall for the previous class to let out. I didn't notice any looks at all in my public speaking class. I did get one "I like the kilt" or "Nice kilt", not sure which one, when I was leaving the lab class to go to the lecture class where it turns out that I signed up for the right class but somewhere along the line I got the wrong room number. I'm sure I turned some heads in my math class but being in front I coulnd't see many others. The people around me either ignored it or accepted it. I even walked out with the guy siting next to me continuing the discussion from class (the first day was just an introduction to the class and people around you).

I did not get a chance to talk to my pontential new employeer in the kilt because he didn't return my call after school (he said to call). He did call me after work hours (though he was still working) and said to call him after school tomorrow. I plan on changing to the kilt before meeting with him because I want to bring it up before showing up for work one day and saying "you don't mind the kilt do you?"

I will report any activity on that front in the office thread.

So overall aside from a few strange looks it was a typical day, plus a kilt.

Actually, you shouldn't mention the kilt at all. Just wear it like it's the most natural thing in the world. If he happens to bring up the subject, deal with it. Otherwise, you're home free!

That is pretty much what I planned, by bringing it up I ment that I would wear it and if it comes up it is better that it does before I will be meeting vendors.
