I thought this was humorous...This group in Scotland is teaching Spanish (among other languages) over the internet and pod casts. Great lessons by the way if you want to learn Spanish in your spare time.

So, here I am in the Southern US, running a company named after my Cherokee heritage, making kilt belts while wearing a kilt and listening to Spanish lessons taught by a Scottish instructor over the internet. Just one of life's funny little circles

Both my parents are teachers. I can tell you that a lot of people do in fact think that you are your job. They don't think beyond what you do. I can't tell you how many times we went to the grocery and ran into people who were surprised to see us outside of the school
So- good for you for wearing the kilt to work.

Cuando yo estaba en el colegio, mis amigos pensaban que mis padres fueron de Espan~a, porque yo aprendi' el Espan~ol mas rapidamente que ellos. Les dije, "I'm from here, the same as y'all are. I just try to learn is the only difference."

Enchillada!
"Gracious Burrito Senor Sombraro" is the extent of my Spanish and I probably spelled most of those words wrong.
(whereas my dad went on a mission to Chile and STILL speaks Spanish in his sleep. He also made me name my cat "Preciossa" which I can't spell now and I certainly couldn't spell when I was 5. I called her "Pressy")
Me? I start sweating when I go to a Mexican restaurant that doesn't have pictures on the menu
As a side note that is kilt-related, my husband has gone to several Chinese restaurants and his karate class in a kilt.

The beauty of the S.I.A. site is it is en Spanish. A nice handout (printout in Spanish) of either of these sites with pictures of the kilted performers would end the kilted Spaniard problem.
It is interesting that the parents see you as a Hispanic. I have had a similar experience with parents thinking that I am a minister, just because they only see me as a religious person teaching their children every Sunday. Our congregation's minister suggested that I should be in Clergy tartan for the occasions when I lead a service. I explained that I would then feel out of place.
My High School French teacher had a Polish name, and my German teacher was from Mexico. Go figure.

I teach biology and wore a kilt to our last evening meeting at school for incoming Freshmen and their parents. Got lots of great comments (lots of "I hope you wear it to class!").

Confrences are so important to the existance/coexistance of the teacher and the student in their charge. The communication set up then makes it easier for both parties to exchange information. (Cripes! I'm starting to sound like an educator, wait a minute... I am).
The more both sides can add to the initial atmosphere the better. I held my last two parent teacher conferences kilted and have never had the kilt get in the way of a good relationship. I feel that it actually helps.

I've worn my kilt to parent teacher conferences for my children. Had a few teachers over the years admit they would like to wear theirs. It is good to see teachers wearing them more and more.

¡Que bueno que hablas español! Me gustaria que mis estudiantes tuvieran un atitud así. Muchos no saben que si dan un poco de esfuerzo, no es muy dificil aprender hablar el español.
