I will be the voice of dissent in the crowd and say that it can look good in certain outfits. I have one I wear occasionally with a tweed jacket and vest, solid tie and white shirt and the glengarry to match the kilt, not unlike wearing the tie in tartan matching the kit. A lot depends on what you wear it with and how loud the tartan is. In general, however most folks, as stated above, would not choose it.
Tartan Glengarries can be had at House of Tartan for a reasonable price (about $20US in 500 tartans). I bought the one, wear it occasionally, but do not plan on ordering more. Now a nice casual tartan tam, that is a different matter, worn with or without the kilt.
