This has to be one of the best online communities on the blogswebs. In short order, my questions got answered, and I now have multiple solutions to my footwear needs.
And I may be heading down I-70 to Hwy 177 to buy Rogerson a beer -- kilted, no doubt -- next weekend.
Thank you, gentlemen!

I second the Spotsman's Guide recommendation. I bought a pair of these monsters (under $20.00); they are heavy, comfortable, and indestructible:

The "Cabela's" catalog has a large selection of boots of all different types. You might want to take a look. Also "Brigade Quartermaster" is another good source for boots.

Lots of great ideas here. I will add to the list that you might want to check out Wolverine boots. Yes, work boots not combat boots. However, they have one style called the Marquette. They only go slightly above the ankle, are available in black, look great with a kilt, are extremely comfortable, last a long time and are only $50-60 a pair. At least they were the last time I bought some they may have gone up a bit now. Their website says $97.00 but I bought them for around $55 plus tax at an outlet store.

I would locate a military surplus store, they seem to be everywhere, get some good used military issued boots at a very reasonable price. I bought some recently for a veterans function and I plan to wear them with my kilt also.

The best combat boots (if you don't need waterproof boots) is the Corcoran 10" Marauder! I've been wearing these since I got out of basic. I've got two pair, one in black and one in suede. Very comfortable, lightweight, plenty of support, and keeps you feet cool.

Tactical boots
I second this sentiment. I have worn these for ages. They are a great boot and wear like iron in spite of being sort of a nylon looking item.
BTW - google "Ranger Joe's". They have about all the boots you can imagine. I still say look in the second hand/army surplus places.
