I need help with combat boots
I'm in the market for some combat boots to wear with my kilts on weekends and also to wear when the weather turns lousy, like today.
While I love you all dearly and appreciate your concern for my feet, please save the "Save up and spend $180" responses. I want to buy army surplus, and I want to pay army surplus prices. If I buy another pair in two years, so be it. I'm out $50. I won't be wearing them often enough to justify spending big money.
I'm finding lot of black leather GI-style combat boots for $40-$50. That would fit the bill nicely. Problem is, I'm just 5-8. I'm concerned the classic 10" combat boot will go too far up my leg and my hose will get lost.
The only 8" boots I'm seeing are a combination of leather and canvas/nylon, and I'd really prefer leather. I just think they look cooler.
Questions:
1) Am I wrong about the boots? Should I even be worried about hose?
2) Does anyone know of a website with black leather 8" boots? Google isn't as helpful as I might like.
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

Everything is proportional. You can buy low boots and high boots but you'll never buy a pair that will cover your hose (Unless you buy riding boots that come up over your knee). Even Cocran "jiump boots" are only about 10" high. Go somewhere and try on a few pair. Goodwill is a good place to find them. Low leather hiking boots are about $8

Instead of just "combat" boots, Google or otherwise search for "patrol" or "tactical" boots. That's what I ended up with, since I wanted side zippers. With a bit of searching (Zappos, etc), you should be able to find something that will work in your size at a substantial discount. I would try my favs:
Ebay
Amazon
Zappos
Botach Tactical
That's all I can remember off the top of my head. Good luck, and I love my black boots with my kilt, or (dare I say) jeans, dickies, whatever. They look and feel good every day!

You might want to take a look at www.afmo.com.
You can get a pair of speedlace combat boots for around $40. Leather Jump boots start at around $50. ( http://www.afmo.com/G_I_Style_Speedl.../211-00119.htm )
I've purchase from them a few times. Unfortunately, they no longer have the shoes I liked (should have purchased more when they did). I used to get good old fashioned Navy/Marine Corps black leather oxfords from them. $35 a pair. hard to beat for good all leather dress shoes.

I second the "tactical" boot. I won't recommend the ones I wear because of your "please don't" request, but tactical boots are designed for every situation so basically what you get is a lightweight, waterproof, non-skid running shoe in the shape of a boot with pretty much zero break in time. Highly recommended!

If you see a pair you like but the price is too high, check out ebay for a new or used pair in your size. I bought a pair of Danner Patrol tactical boots (~$205 retail) for $90 including shipping. My only complaint is that they are HEAVY!
Similarly, you can get Ecco Track IVs in black (~$215 retail) for a good deal too, especially used. I bought some in brown and they are the most comfortable boots or shoes I have ever worn, and can be re-soled.
