Here are some close ups for you

    Imitation Horn Buttons

You will find these on most day wear jackets these days

    Horn Buttons

These are on my Harris Tweed I estimate this jacket to be about 50 years old

    Wood Buttons

This is a close up of my Burns Check with wood buttons again I'd say 40 -50 years old for this jacket

Another thing I'd like to note is that with the imitation buttons I've had to sew them back to make sure they stay on, I've never had to resew any of my older jackets. The Horn or Wood or even leather covered buttons are seen on day wear jackets whereas the silver buttons are usually seen on more formal jackets, the PC, or the doublets come to mind.

Thanks Fluter for bringing up the 10 Looks thread this is exactly why we posted it.

Just a bit of trivia here. 50 or so years ago, buttons were always sewn on by hand. I remember watching the tailor just down the street do that. Today they are machine sewn, and of course the thread is NOT tied and knotted off. Hence the reason they will always need resewing.
