I am delighted to say, that the tartan glengarry has not become a fashion. I am even more delighted that the "exception that proves the rule" should remain in its glass case. One can overdo the tartan theme.

Probably too much. I would only wear a glengarry in a tartan if I were wearing a solid color kilt. Otherwise, your suspicions are correct, it would be too much.

I agree with most, the solid color goes a long way with me!

I almost forgot about this. If you really really need some flair in your glengarry, instead of tartan or black, get one in a solid color that you like. I've seen tan (khaki-ish), blue, green, etc. That could look pretty smart!

Oh my!...that last one was-
I really- REALLY, REALLY recommend that you stick with solid color, especially for a glengarry.
But, nonetheless, It's up to you.

I found the "checkerboard" pattern of the Glengarry to be a bit much. I have a Glengarry in the Muir tartan (matches the kilt). When worn with a Prince Charlie jacket looks just right and not overdone.

That is known as "dicing", and is worn by a number of Scottish regiments in the Commonwealth.
