Grrrr! A frustrating choice

I purchased an extra yard of fabric, intending to make a matching waistcoat for the kilt that I ordered. As it turns out, the fabric cannot be matched to the front apron of the kilt! Grrrr!

I've turned both sides of the fabric [it's asymmetric in both directions] every which way more than a few times, but either the sequence of stripes matches and the twill runs at right angles, or the twill matches and the stripes are reversed. Grrrr!

Since the tartan is the most obvious aspect of the fabric, I've got to match it and ignore the weave; however, the inconsistency is killing me. It's also possible that the light can make the two pieces appear different because of the weave.

Since this is a family-friendly forum, I'm just gonna say "Grrrr!" again ...

Sorry to hear about that, Aldisimo. Did you think about making the front of the waistcoat on the bias? I think that's the way it is usually done. There's probably better advice, so I hope something works out.

Did you think about making the front of the waistcoat on the bias?

The weave still wouldn't match. Anyway, I've always felt that cutting one piece on the bias indicated that the sew-er was too lazy to match the pattern.

It's hard for me to get a good idea of how all of that matches up anyway. Is that your new five yard kilt?

Yes, it's my BT. I think I'll go ahead with the waistcoat, but for the sake of sanity and style, I'll never wear it with the kilt. It's a beautiful tartan that will stand on its own.

That's a neat idea, Aldisimo, to wear something in tartan other than with the kilt.

And now that I try to see it in my mind, the tartan waistcoat with kilt might be too much of the same pattern together. I don't know...

I'm not up on the terminology but why not cut the fabric so the pattern is diagonal like argyle hose ?

On the diagonal is 'on the bias' as Ted already suggested.

It is tantalizing that you were able to buy a single yard of fabric along with your kilt, Aldisimo. Did you just ask Chris to include a yard of fabric in your order?
