Wearing a kilt to a gig.

I just got hired in as an emergency bass player for a local band for a show on Friday (3 days from now). I always wear a kilt when I am not at work, so I am going to be wearing it at the gig. Only worry is, I haven't even met the entire band and am worried that they may get a little turned off that I am wearing one. Were it a Celtic band or something, I am sure it would go over well, but as it is a grunge band...who knows. You think I should just forget about the kilt until my place in the band is a little more solid?

Musicians should be tolerant of just about anything. Look at what Angus of AD/DC wears. Wear the kilt.

If they judge you on anything aside from how well you play, you may not want a permanent gig with them... I'd go for it.

Grunge band? Kurt Cobain wore a kilt on several occasions that I remember and he's about as grunge as it gets. The guys from Pearl Jam used to tie their flannel shirts around their waists giving them a kilted look too. The lead singer of Korn (and my fave band) wear a kilt onstage all the time. He's also a good pipe player too boot. Wear it. The other guys in the band may take your lead and get themselves kilted as well. But if anything, you'll be able to break the "bass player never gets the girls" curse ;)

BTW -My parents now "summer" in Grand Rapids. Actually, I was born in Michigan myself. Not sure when I'll make it back though. I'm sure soon since my folks are always bugging me to bring their grand children up.

Well, I decided to at least wear it to our first practice today and see what the vibe is. If they are all for it, I will be wearing it. Next week, the band is playing at a pub, so I have to wear it there. Also, my girlfriend will be in town, and she loves 2 things; me playing music and me wearing a kilt. Figure I should be a nice boyfriend and do both for her since she is having a rough week and needs some fun.

Your kilt should fit right in with the "grunge". You can't go wrong as a musician wearing a kilt!!

If you have a gig at a pub, then chances are your bandmates will only resent the fact that they don't have a kilt themselves to perform in. Might wanna mention to them they can get some quick casuals from SWK for less than $40.00
