Thanks everyone. As was pointed out by Rex, it is just a personal taste thing for me, and yes the gut has something to do with it, but I appreciate your comments.
My sense is that you guys in North America are a little more experimental than I am.
Cheers, Graham.

Nah, just think of it as more advanced... . Casual = comfortable, wear what you are comfortable in and to the level you are comfortable with.

Graham, you're wearing a kilt. In Oxford.
That's fairly experimental to start with!

As I get older - I'm now 53 - I start to feel that I should "act my age" with regards to clothing, at least when going out - even to the pub! In regards to "casual kilting" I've often done the t-shirt w/boots w/ scrunched-down hose look in the past, but I feel a tad silly with that nowadays. It seems a look more appropriate for the young lads.
So, I'm leaning more towards the polo or buttoned shirt w/ pulled up hose and flashes for going out casually. Hiking or walking is a differnt story, of course....

Perhaps it's not a changing of attitude but rather a matter of vanity. I lean more now to shirts than to t-shirts to disguise or hide my expanding girth .

Open collar piper shirts. Some also refer to them as safari- or military-style shirts.

I think its all relative... DO what makes you feel comfortable.... nothing else! Be secure in how you dress and in your attitude and it will reflect. If your comfortable in tshirt and combat boots with a flat cap and white hose so be it if your comfortable dressed to the hilt traditional so be it if your comfort lies somewhere in between GREAT!!!
We can't live by what other people think or feel about us. It needs to come from the heart or you cant be comfortable in your own skin and that will show. I say just be you and there is no room for fault. Just be true to yourself and KILT ON !!!!
