Dying wool and hair on a skin

I'd like to know if anyone has attempted to dye a tanned sheepskin or goatskin. I have a white sheepskin and would like to make a few sporrans. It would be nice to be able to dye the hair/fur to achieve different color combinations. I do know that doing a hot dye (like dying wool) will harden the skin so that's not an option. I hate to experiment with the skin and waste any of it.

Your absolutely right about the HOT Dyeing part. Have you checked with a group such as Tandy Leather about this process? Again right about ruining any part of the Lambskin, From experience, when I bought the two full New Zeland skins for my
Santa Suit years and years ago they were very expensive and I'm sure they cost even more today.
