    Leopard Skin?

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but. Can anyone tell me what the significance of the leopard skin on drummers (particulary the bass drummer) in a pipe band is? I noticed this at the Citadel this past weekend, and have seen it before. Just curious!

    leopard skin...

    Donnie,

See this article from the Calgary Highlanders web page:

    http://www.calgaryhighlanders.com/skins.htm

The Wellington (New Zealand) Scottish Pipes & Drums gives this explanation on their site:

Often the bass drummer will wear a leopard skin over the shoulders in the manner of the standard bearers of the Roman legions, and the drum will be emblazoned with the Regimental Battle Honours if it is a military band.

    Cheers,

    T.

    Leopard Skin

A fancy way of protecting uniform from drum, and in turn drum from uniform buttons.
