The whole point here is to have an apron that flares out as it goes down, and pleats that hug the small of your back and then round over your rear.
If the apron flares too much, it's really hard to get it to shape properly, but if it doesn't flare at all it looks like a Utilikilt (which is fine if it is a Utilikilt, but this isn't).

Typically, men have a belly and the back side is not that prominent.

Men with a waist larger than 38" I would recommend equal splits for the apron hip (Ah) and pleating in the hips (Ph).
