Nick,
The fedoras from Target have a much narrower brim and all have a pattern.
Cheers

Oh, I didn't know they all had patterns at Target. I'll have to think about that.
I was thinking of the kind with the shorter brim and the curl around the back.
I could go for a black or charcoal black fedora. It would go well with any of the suits, I think.

I am now in search of a traditional felt fedora, and that is more what I had in mind for use with the kilt.
I've changed my mind after looking closely at the selection and discriptions of the Target fedoras. There are a couple of solid colors on the site, but the gray canvas hat I already have will probably do me better.
I want to be able to try the hat on, and that is the main sticking point in all of this. I'm just going to have to find a local store that has felt fedoras or live without one.

I was able to get to Target today... Those wern't quite what I had in mind...
I ended up going to a different box store, and I bought a woven straw hat to replace the one I have.
So I will keep on planning on finding a traditional felt fedora. The other place had felt hats that were really some kind of stiff plastic covered with felt like material.
In fact, I think I will try to figure out what my hat measurement is, and open up to on-line options...

That might work the best, as you'll likely have a bigger selection. Good luck!

Well, thanks; I will keep looking; Target was a starting point. Now that I have seen those hats, I know without any doubt that I want the felt fedora. I'm talking about one with a medium sized brim that is wide enough to have a nice rolled curl to the back. I don't mind the wide brims that are flatter in the back, but it is not what I have in mind. The hats I saw were cotton and the brim was very short. The back of the brim looked like it was just ffolded up without much of a roll to it.
My new straw hat will do fine for now.

For anyone interested in real fedoras made in a variety of styles and materials do a search for "fedora" on the website shoebuys.com and you should come up with nearly three pages of them at a nice variety of price points as well. I just bought three from them this weekend after being in a hat shop asking $200US for one low quality fedora in grey felt. I got my three for under $150 shipped, in black, dark, and light grey, to go with my dress coats and winter overcoats this coming winter. Nice sale going on with good quality hats of all varieties, despite the fact that the site is a shoe discount site.

Another site that has some decent real fedoras is Aaron's hats (www.getahaton.com.) It's where I do most of my hat buying. They have a wide variety and some pretty decent models.

I have one that has held up for about 3 years now...but I've only worn it twice.
