Encounter with 3 'kids' at Target

Today Sunday, my wife and I were shopping at Target for some sweaters to go with my kilts, when we find ourselves in an aisle facing 3 'kids' (between 17-19 y/o maybe) as we walked one way they were walking towards us.

The kids and I locked eyes, we nodded to each other and kept walking. Of course they were staring from the moment we entered the aisle and they saw us.

So we pass each other and then we turn for the next aisle. Soon after I can hear them laughing and saying something I couldnt understand, but then they said fairly aloud 'hey hey come heRRE laddie!'.

So, wife and I looked at each other and she knew, so I walked back to where the kids were having a good time at my expense, and soon as they saw me they started to muffle their laughs and act cool you know, like 'ok cool it while the skirt dude is here'

So, since I have no problems walking to someone's face...I walked straight into their little threesome and plainly said 'yes?, you guys called me?'

One of them got whiter than a sheet of paper real quick and of course started to explain they were just goofing and didn;t mean anything by it, how they think is cool and they saw braveheart and the pegasus parade and the louisville pipe band, etc. and sort of apologized.

I very quickly explained that there are several other kilties in our area, and some of them may not be as patient as me and left them with a parting thought.

'Be respectful to others instead of goofy to yourselves'

Couple of thumbs up and back to my wife I went.

I'll admit that I white faced when I had to face her anger towards me for going after those kids though.

I know who wears the pants in our household.

Well... could have been worse I guess.

Is "laddie" supposed to be a pun?

In my household, I wear the pants and the skirts... Everyone else wears fur.

Well then a good thing you are kilted and have no need for pants!

I have received a few snickers and odd looks in my short time wearing the kilt. And unless the person is overly obnoxious, I tend to get a bit of amusement out of it. Last week I wore my kilt out for the hell of it and had a co-worker with his girlfriend see me and start pointing and laughing and he started saying a few "witty" things. When he saw me laughing along with, he asked why I wasn't giving it back to him or getting mad. "You shoudln't be laughing!" he said.

    I agreed.

I said, "You're right. I shouldn't be laughing. But your stupidity is so damn funny that I can't help myself. Some guy with a ball cap turned backwards, pants down to his knees, and who doesn't even know where Scotland is telling me I dress "crazy"? I'll feel bad for how pathetic you are later, but right now you are just hilarious and that was the funniest things I have heard all day."

He didn't say anything after that. He just sort of stared and wondered wth just happened.

Wow! Kilts are old school, but that's totally pre Roman Celtic! I'm impressed! (Or is that not what you meant?)

    Well... You see, Nighthawk...
I live alone, but with six cats...

The cats wear fur usually, but sometimes feathers.

However, now that I think about it, I do have that bunny sporran. Guess we all wear fur in my home...

These wouldn't be the same type that wear their baseball caps inside out/sideways, and their pants hanging down around their knees, by any chance?

In my experience, kids do not need a kilt to have a laugh at their elder's expense. They will find something, and the object of their goofery need not be logical.

I usually just smile, and remember what it was like to feel both insecure and invincible at the same time.

Laughing at someone in a kilt is rude but it isn't illegal. Threatening three teenagers is. How do you think you would have looked on CCTV if things had escalated?

My advice is take your wife's advice.
