Wimping out would be riding the pine. I will be counting down the next 7 years to the Masters class. If you are right handed, try and move your left foot a half step away from the bar. It will help with the natural angle. If you are a Lefty, go opposite. Forgive the illustration, but I am sure you get the point.

If that is not the case, give me some more info and maybe I can come up with another fix. I will bounce it of the old coaches head.
