So, when I read this:

...assuming you meant less than charitable comments, I figured it was-- and then saw that you suggest it was:

It symbolizes the pride I feel in my family's history and the additions I will make, God willing, to that long and proud line of Scottish immigrants that came to this country and contributed their blood, sweat and tears.

...which is to say that their tone probably changed out of respect for you and your values, not necessarily your kilt. Granted, they may see the kilt in a different light, but there's no guarantee they will go away sharing your feelings about it.

Here's hoping you don't have to shed too much blood. Tears and sweat will be plenty.

Oh, and I started off with contemporary (and still wear them), but if I had to do it over again, I'd have saved my pennies and gone for the tank. On the other hand, I doubt I would have been able to get the right tank without having made a few faux pas first, so I'm not regretting a thing.
