    Unless you are going to a lot of Renaissance Faires, maybe you should think about a regular kilt and a shoulder plaid. The belted plaid doesn't have many applications outside of the festivals and the fairs.

    personally, I disagree;
    IMHO, they are very good for formal & casual wear; they have the (for some of us) distinct advantage of automatic adjustment to our waist-lines ; and, one could ( if one wanted to re-start an old argument/discussion ) make an argument that they are "the only "real" form of the Scottish kilt - but I'm NOT going THERE!!

    Your decision for sure. Here are some pics of my USA Kilts semi-trad in MacLeod of Lewis.

    Keep in mind that the Marton Mills PV fabric this kilt is made from does not have the nine perfect black squares. Not sure why, but just has nine different size black rectangles at the center of the sett. Maybe someone knows the reason(??) but its close enough for me and with all the bright yellow I don't know that anyone really notices the difference. Guessing Marton Mills has a reason for weaving the tartan in this manner.

    Happy decision making.

    If you get a belted plaid, feel free to get it in any pattern. They were popular before clan tartans.
