This thread linked above tells the story of Alan H and the amazing X Kilt. There are usually several threads lower down in either the DIY or Pictures categories showing what people have done with Alan "X-Kilt" H's design.

It is, in essence, a narrow aproned box pleated kilt design that Alan came up with so we would all start making our own kilts.
