I'm not sure whether the hillwalker would qualify as tank---generally the ones I've seen advertised that way were machine made and 4-5 yards.

Then there's the made-to-measure contemporary kilt, in good tartan cloth, in a style that does not offend my eye, with pockets engineered to work better than those in my trousers. I have seen such a beast, and I wants one!

I will also be keeping my tank...

Reverting to the original question: Contemporary "versus" Traditional: no.

    Contemporary "or" Traditional: yes.

I've no idea what the present day "Hill Walker" kilts are like. Mine was made to measure out of 16 oz weathered MacMillan Hunting tartan. I couldn't tell you how many yards it used, but in those days I had a 30 inch waist, so it may have been less than a full 8 yards. It weighed about the same as my other kilts, although it was a good inch shorter. Like my other kilts it was totally hand stitched, and it cost about as much as they did at the time.
