Glengarry Help
Well, I’ve decided I am going to buy a Glengarry. There are a few reasons why:
1: Got a sunburn underneath my hair a week ago; time to start wearing hats
2: Should have a nice hat for formal/casual occasions
3: The receding hairline isn’t making me look any younger
I have been looking around, but I cant decide where I should buy, and just how much I need to spend to ensure quality. I have found the cheapest to be from Sportkilts.com for about 35.00. And more expensive, near 100$ ones on Scots Web. I have also found the site: Glengarryhats.com which boast a wide selection, all for 58-60$, and a Leather Glengarry for 75$.
Ideally I would like a Solid Black Glengarry. The red pom on the top of most of the ones I have found are a little off-putting for me
My questions are:
Does anyone have a Glengarry they would recommend / Not Recommend me getting?
Does Anyone have a Leather Glengarry? If So, how is it?

Not sure where you live, but here in Virginia I can't wear a Glengarry in the summer, just too hot. It won't offer you much protection from the sun either.

I live in Maine, I can get away with wearing a wool hat 360 days of the year
And about the sun protection, I just mean something on the top of my head. As long as it coveres the top of my head, im fine. I dont need a brim to block it out from my face, just cover up the top of my head

Generally the Glengarry is considered a military or bandsman's hat. For civilian wear a Balmoral is to be preferred. Ultimately, however, the choice is yours. A few weeks ago at the Greenville Highland Games in South Carolina, Lord Glasgow (chief of Clan Boyle), Harden of Cowdenknowes, Squire of Rubislaw, and Yours Truly, all wore Panama hats the minute bonnets were no longer required.

Maybe some of the more experienced members will have better suggestions, but I can recommend Robert Mackie of Scotland. www.robertmackie.com
Like you I was a bit put off by the red toorie. While they don't have a web store I dropped them an email and they gladly made a balmoral to my requirements; undiced, black toorie, tied bow. Of course they have Glengarrys as well.
Their bonnets are made to MoD requirements; I think they are a military supplier but I'm not sure. I won't pretend to be an expert, but I was very please with the quality of mine.
It was made and shipped out in one day for a total cost of 26.18 GBP including shipping; that's $43 at today's rate. I believe I bought mine about 1 1/2 years ago, so prices could have changed.
Customer service was excellent.

I have a black with white and red dicing Glengarry from Sport Kilt that I found to be very nice for about $35 dollars.
I also have two Balmoral bonnets from Glengarryhats.com and am quite pleased with both of them.
To me the Glengarry is much more formal looking than the Balmoral.
I can always toss on a Balmoral at a jaunty angle an head out the door.
Somehow the Glengarry (to me) requires a bit more sense of occasion.
I must say that personally I like the feel of my tweed deerstalkers and ...
Panache checks left and right to make sure Jock Scot isn't looking
...tweed bucket hat for comfort and practicality.
Then again when I am going to a Highland Game Mid Summer in California I proudly wear a pith helmet because I'm 40 years old and I am tired of sunburn!
Cheers

The only hat a gentleman needs is the one that keeps the sun out of his eyes.
And now perhaps you will join me on the verandah for a Gin & Indian Tonic?

Which is exactly why id like the Glengarry. I just enjoy the, lets call it, Military . I will buy other hats, but for me right now, Id like a Glengarry, even if it may look a touch too formal

For either Balmorals or Glengarry's consider Burnetts & Struth on the western side of the pond and Scotclans.com on the easter side. Prices generally in the 30-40$US range or less plus shipping. I have a couple from each--good quality at a reasonable price. Not quite the heavy weight stuff you might get for a pipe band band more than serviceable for everyday wear.

Check out Celtic Croft (site sponser) as well. They have good prices on their bonnets.
