Morgan is celebrating its centenary this year...




...and this is the sort of car that they manufactured between 1909 and 1953... this one being powered by a two cylinder water cooled J.A.Prestwich motorcycle engine, which dates it to circa 1932, with a top speed of about 80 miles per hour... this beetle-back Morgan SuperSports is a thrilling ride...





...the absence of louvers on the top of the bonnet (hood in American parlance) indicate that this is a Morgan 4/4... four wheels and four cylinders!... launched in 1936, the four-wheeled Morgan was an instant success... dating from 1957-59 this car would have a top speed of about 80 miles per hour... by 1967 4/4s could top 95 miles per hour... the 4/4 is still in production, and today's models are good for nearly 120 miles per hour...




...in 1950 Morgan introduced the +4... the "PLUS" meant greater power than the 4/4, while the "4" pointed out that the car still had four wheels... this car dates from 1958-65, and with better than 100 horse power had a top speed of about 110 miles per hour...between 1950 and 1969 Morgan built fewer than 4000 +4s... and about half of them went to the 'States...

This is Panache's favorite



...and who could blame him! In 1968 Morgan launched the +8... it came from the factory with a Rover V8 engine, and later examples, such as this one, pumped out more than 200 horse power, and a top speed approaching 135 miles per hour... unless The Law caught you first!
