Must say though, while you were photo documenting ole wrong way, Matt did get some fairly tasty pics....purely for research and example puroses though!
At least they accepted responsibility for it, most places won't even do that.
Not insured was it? Homeowners, know what I mean!!!!
Wouldn't be surprised if the first scenario occurred, although you'd think they would have gotten a signature or ID for something that valuable -- and it would have been remembered when the second person showed up.
As for the final paragraph, not only does it hint at fraud but even if he were not being compensated most homeowner's insurance A) has a higher deductible than the camera's value and B) making this claim could either cause them to cancel you next year or raise your premiums by more than the amount. Sad truth of homeowner's insurance, you'd best use it only for catastrophic losses and just eat the little stuff. IMHO, of course.

I was very tired and very frustrated when I wrote the first post and I do apologize for the comments I made in that state of mind.
I do realize it was my fault for leaving it on the van, but theirs too for not securing it more properly after having it in their possession. And I do/will appreciate it if and when they send the check.
I have contacted the Chief and thanked him for handling this for me and will send a letter of thanks to him once it is all settled.
The pictures posted by Matt were very good and other Xmarkers there I'm sure have some great ones too.

I wasn't meaning to hint nor suggest fraud though I see how it could come across that way sorry!
I thought there was a clause where you could have personal possesions insured against theft, but I guess 600 would be under the deductable.

Especially when you live in Florida.

I think you're lucky to get a dime out of the Fire Chief. That he actually took responsibility for the actions of this staff is extremely commendable.

Drat, Joly, that's bad news. I do hope you get that check, but it's a shame the pics are gone.

Hated to hear about this, JStN, but like others and glad to hear that the Chief stepped up to take financial responsibility... almost unheard of these days. Still, things like that leave a bad feeling that can be hard to shake. Hope the pleasant memories of Grandfather Mt. outlast the bad one.

Generally, I take the view that a "Lost and Found" department is a mere free courtesy extended to those who have, through their own actions, "lost" something. That anyone would expect this free "courtesy" to have any responsibility or liability for returning goods to their rightful owner is utterly beyond me.

There appear to be a great many facts about this situation taht some here fail to understand!
First, the driver on the van knew who the camera belong to, we have a few long conversations that day, kilts, families, tartans, and had a few pictures taken together on that very camera, and he took a few pictures for me.
Second he realized who the camera belong to once he found it in his van after I had forgotten it! And to my understanding explained my appearance to the person he surrendered the camera to at the lost and found.
Third, the lost and found person failed to secure the camera properly according to their protocol and it came up missing. I see no reason to question their responsibility for the cost of the camera. Nor does the Fire Chief who was in charge of the transportation personnel.
Maybe now it will be easier for some here to understand why
